Facts about Hiv

1-What is HIV?
HIV stands for 'human immunodeficiency virus'. HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system (mainly CD4 positive T cells and macrophages—key components of the cellular immune system), and destroys or impairs their function. Infection with this virus results in the progressive depletion of the immune system, leading to 'immune deficiency'.
The immune system is considered deficient when it can no longer fulfil its role of fighting off infection and diseases. Immunodeficient people are much more vulnerable to a wide range of infections, most of which are very rare among people without immune deficiency. Diseases associated with severe immunodeficiency are known as 'opportunistic infections', because they take advantage of a weakened immune system.

2 What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for 'acquired immunodeficiency syndrome' and describes the collection of symptoms and infections associated with acquired deficiency of the immune system. Infection with HIV has been established as the underlying cause of AIDS. The level of HIV in the body and the appearance of certain infections are used as indicators that HIV infection has progressed to AIDS (see Question 4) .
3 What are the symptoms of HIV?

more

Haifa Wehbe calendar, book to support fight against AIDS in Africa

imo Ben Bachir, president of the Red Ribbon campaign against AIDS, has invited several international celebrities to support his association’s work against AIDS. Among Simo’s big projects this year are the 2008 calendar and book featuring Lebanese singer Haifa Wehbe. Simo talks about his project and working with Haifa.

Magharebia: Why did you choose [Lebanese singer Haifa Wehbe] for the 2008 calendar?
Simo Ben Bachir: Apart from the fact that Haifa Wehbe is a superstar, she is also an ambassador for the Red Ribbon and the fight against AIDS in Africa and the Arab world. I suggested to Haifa that she might donate the best of her photos and some other exclusives to launch the official Haifa Wehbe calendar, which will be sold to raise money for forthcoming work to combat AIDS in Africa. There are plans for an official tour by Haifa with journalists and VIPs after the launch of the calendar.

Magharebia: How would you describe Haifa as a star and as a person? Is there any difference?

Ben Bachir: Haifa is the most modest star I’ve ever seen! I know several celebrities, but Haifa is still my favourite, whether as a fan, a collaborator or whatever! She gives you time and listens to you. I’m happy to work with her on new projects. Her official visit to Morocco last year was an enormous success, not only here but everywhere ... Haifa the artist and Haifa the woman are one and the same -- always beautiful! But it’s her inner rather than her outer beauty which is most attractive. She’s a model of modesty and kindness.

Magharebia: How do you know Haifa?

Ben Bachir: We met in Beirut as part of the campaign to support Oprah Winfrey for the Nobel prize -- I was president of the Africa and Middle East region and she was an ambassador -- through her manager, Cynthia Mehanna, who is a friend. And right from our first meeting we really felt as though we had known each other for years.

Magharebia: Is this the first time that you have written a book about a celebrity?

Ben Bachir: Yes, it’s my first book. I’ve always written articles, but [Lady Haifa] will be my first book and I’m so excited to be launching it on the market...

Magharebia: What made you write?

Ben Bachir: I’m president of the Red Ribbon association, but I’m also a journalist. I had to find a source for our association but also for others I work with, such as OPALS Maroc (Pan-African organisation to combat AIDS), and since we’ve always worked with celebrities, I’ve brought the stars into what I do. Hence the idea of bringing out a book on all the celebrities we’ve worked with, to benefit our future campaigns.

Magharebia: Why did you choose Haifa as the subject of your book?

Ben Bachir: I worked with Haifa in 2006 for a major campaign which was a real success for the Red Ribbon. Apart from the fact that she’s a superstar, she’s also kind and modest. I believe the public as a whole is interested in knowing Haifa, hence the idea of bringing out a book looking behind the scenes at her life and satisfying the public’s curiosity. It’s not for nothing that she receives the most media attention of any woman in the Arab world!

Magharebia: How long have you been writing this book?

Ben Bachir: Since the summer of 2006. The project’s on hold at the moment, because I’m so busy with preparations for the official 2008 calendar.

Magharebia: Have you any plans to travel to the Lebanon soon?

Ben Bachir: Of course, I’ve been several times and I’m getting ready to head off there once more to put the finishing touches to the calendar.

Magharebia: What difficulties did you encounter in writing the book?

Ben Bachir: Fans contact me day after day. They want to know everything about her. Everything! But it’s impossible to say everything about her in a single book -- I’d need to write a hundred volumes.

Magharebia: Do you think this book will be a success?

Ben Bachir: Absolutely. I’m betting on it being a bestseller. Given the number of people contacting me every day to buy it, that wouldn’t surprise me!

Magharebia: Why do you think Haifa is interested in the idea of having a book written about her? She’s young, and generally people write biographies about their subjects when they’re older.

Ben Bachir: Firstly, this is not a biographical book. It’s a book about a person, Haifa, star of song but also of social life, given her future travels in Africa. The book and the calendar are first and foremost for her “Haifa for Africa” campaign, with which medicines and Haifa t-shirts will be distributed across several African countries.

Magharebia: Have you any plans to write any other books?

Ben Bachir: Yes. The next one will be called Foxy & Famous and it will also look behind the scenes at the lives of several stars that I know and with whom I have spent some time.
This content was commissioned for Magharebia.com
